How to Make Body Bars

[back to budget body equipment]

Making a bodybar is not very difficult, providing that you have access to a saw.  PVC pipe comes in a variety of widths, but they are usually 8-10 feet in length.  I suggest starting with 2" pipe, but you can judge for yourself when you go to the hardware store based upon the feel of the pipe.

Things you'll need

  • hack saw or alternative that can be used to cut the pipe

  • PVC Glue

  • length of PVC pipe typically 1.5" to 2" for starters

  • 2 PVC end caps (same width as the pipe)

  • Filler:  play sand, pea gravel, rebar, or any combination of stuff to add the weight.

  • plastic funnel (optional but recommended to get the filler into the pipe)

Using a saw, you cut the pipe to the desired length, typically around 5-6 feet.  Using the glue applicator, run the PVC glue around the last inch of pipe on one side, as well as the inside of the end cap.  Immediately put the end cap on the pipe and work it down as far as you can.  Next you can add whatever type of filler that you want.  I typically use sand, but you can also use pea gravel, rocks, or a combination of whatever you want.  You might want to use a cheap plastic funnel for this if you're pouring it out of a bag.  Once it's filled, glue the other end cap and tighten it onto the bar.  That's all there is too it.  Let me know if you have further questions and good luck!
